Henery the IV was a protestant when he was elected king in 1589. This was controversial because the protestants and catholics were at war in france. Since the majority of France was Catholic he decided to renounce his protestant beliefs and turned Catholic. However in 1598 he gave rights to the french protestants this was called Edict of Nantes it also allowed the creation of 100 Protestant strongholds, furthermore it allowed protestants to run for public office. Sadly after he died the next king revoked the Edict of Nantes and persecuted most of the protestants.
