The Palace of Versailles, like any castle, serves as a symbol of the time period. This particular palace is beyond extravagant. Many educated scholars have attempted to put a price on this timeless building; estimates vary between 100 and 300 billion dollars American. This château was inhabited by the Royal Family from 1682 to 1789. Historians say that there could have been up to 20 000 people living in the castle at one time. With over 700 bedrooms, multiple dining halls and endless gardens, one could say this castle was as close to magnificent as you could get. At one point, the King and Queen decided to build an addition to the castle in the form of seven rooms that were named after Roman Gods. These rooms are as follows:
Salon de Diane- a room named after the Roman goddess of the hunt
Salon de Mars- a room named after the Roman god of war
Salon de Mercure- a room named after the Roman god of trade and commerce
Salon d’Apollon- a room named after the Roman god of the Fine Arts
Salon de Jupiter- a room named after the Roman god of law and order
Salon de Saturne- a room named after the Roman god of agriculture and harvest
Salon de Venus- a room named after the Roman goddess of love
These rooms, along with the rest of the castle show the difference in wealth of the different classes during this time period. Clearly, the Royal Family was living the life of luxury; however, outside the castle walls life was not as fabulous. For this reason, the Palace of Versailles has become known not only as an outstanding castle but also as a symbol of the wealth and power of the Royal family during this era.
