What is globalization? Globalization is a term used to describe the process of integration and interaction among people around the world. It’s driven by trade and technology that allows access to information. The effects are spread throughout the environment, cultures, political systems of the world, economic development and prosperity, and on our physical well-being even. There are three main areas that globalization affects deeply; social, political, and economic.

It can affect social through the conformation of what is right and what is wrong (see photo 3). Racism was never considered “bad” until recently; but the general concession now is that racism is a terrible thing. The KKK used to be deemed as right to burn the “black devils” but now that thought is one of horror. General membership still exists but it is constantly on the decline as this chart from Wikipedia shows:

year membership

1920 4,000,000

1924 6,000,000

1930 30,000

1970 2,000

2006 5,000

The popular slogan, “Say no to racism” is know throughout the world and is highly supported by most people. Racism is a touchy issue as people can use it as an excuse for various things. The most recent was the woman convicted of murder and possession of illegal drugs and weapons, she claimed that she was victimized and the judge was racial (Calgary Herald, Saturday September 1).

It can affect political through the imposing of new policies or plans by the United Nations (see photo2). For example the new Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Development plan that was announced recently, on 13 April 2006. The UN hopes to use this plan to boost technology all around the world and use it to develop underdeveloped countries and fight poverty. This technology will come from all corners to join and increase by four times the amount of things we can do with technology that we create by ourselves.

It can affect economic through many different ways. One way that was very important to the development of the world was the Silk Road that was across Central Asia that connected China and Europe during the Middle Ages (see photo 1). This allowed commercial trading between Europe and Asia. The trading, along with previously unknown goods was also traded with information including power-shifts, new technology, even new countries that were being discovered. Globalization affected the economic world greatly and the Silk Road is only the tip of the iceberg to understand how much has been influenced by it.

Globalization affects three main areas; economic, political, and social. Although these three are the main areas, globalization can also affect the environment, cultures, political systems of the world, economic development and prosperity, and physical well-being. These effects are driven by trade and technology that allows access to information. The process of integration and interaction that is helped by the access of information is summed up in the term, globalization.

Globalization can also be narrowed down to three main ideas, political, economical and social each of these has a unique effect on connecting the world for the better.

Political globalization has changed drastically from the old era to the new era. This is because in the old era political globalization was not a term of peace it was more of a term of power where a single power dominated a region. Now political globalization is more of a cooperative effort among countries rather than a hostile one. Without this political unity most conflicts would result in a fight for power where as now it can be solved in a more diplomatic way. An example of the old era is the British Empire and an example of the new era is the European Union.

Social globalization can refer to both cultural globalization and globalization of communication. The integration of society’s beliefs and values are made possible through communication technology. For example you are able to share your opinions with someone on the other side of the globe. An example of a profound social globalization is American TV and film industries which have spread their cultural philosophies and lifestyle around the world.

Economical Globalization is the spread of economical relationships2. These are obtained through multinational globalization. This is possible because technology has eased the movement of money from country to country. Economic globalization is helped through free trade agreements and hindered by trade barriers. A prime example of economic globalization is an American oil company investing in and developing resources in a third world country.

Globalization is defined as “the worldwide integration of humanity and the

compression of both the temporal and spatial dimensions of planet wide human

interaction” (
http://www2.truman.edu). The three categories that can be explored

when thinking about the term globalization are; social, political and economic. The

example that I chose for social is the telephone, for political the UN and finally

for economic the example of the United States cutting all ties with Cuba thereby

greatly affecting its economic future.

Since the telephone was invention in the late 1800s it has quickly made its way into

all of our lives. I can’t imagine going through a day without using this form of

communication. It greatly helped in linking the world together. By bringing nations

closer it has made it much easier to share ideas. This in my opinion was one of the

most ground breaking inventions as far as new technologies are involved, and a key

instrument of globalization.

I chose the UN as the example of the political aspect of globalization. The UN has

created worldwide standards in many different categories, mostly human rights. The

UN also provides a means for most of the countries in the world to gather and

communicate their feelings on various issues. Since the UN was founded in 1945, it

has been able to accumulate 192 member states across the world. It is of huge

importance in our modern world as it continues to work to build better co-operation

between nations.

My final example, of globalization is the economic embargo against Cuba enacted by

the United States during the Cold War. Trade is one of the most important aspects of

having a good economy. In order to keep their economy strong a country has to be

able to both import and export goods and services. Because the US, one of the most

powerful countries in the world, made the decision to blockade Cuba, they basically

sentenced them to economic failure. This embargo in combination with the communist

dictatorship that resides in Cuba has made it very hard for the country to succeed.

In order for a country to have and maintain a good economy it is essential to have

strong global trading links.

These three examples show clearly that the social, economic and political aspects

are an important of globalization. Globalization determines many things about the

kind of country and world that we live in and can be found almost everywhere you

look.

Merriam Webster defines globalization the development of an increasingly integrated global economy marked especially by free trade, free flow of capital, and the tapping of cheaper foreign labour markets.

Social globalization has become such an important part of modern day lives that I’m not sure where we would be without it. There was a day when people never dreamt of the simplest thing as fire, when people thought that trains went so fast that a human could not with stand the speed. Now we are in a day that you may talk to someone on the other side of the world as if you were right in front of them. Being able to see someone using a web cam, talking through instant messenger, or even talking on the phone has become an everyday thing for most people. Without social globalization, information would have no way to get around at the speeds it does, the news would not spread, and people on the other side of the world would not have the same important as if they were right here.

Political globalization can be shown with the example of one government depicts a law, and this law can and will effect countries around that government. The system in which this government is politically run can affect the surrounding countries. The choices that a government makes will affect the countries surrounding.

When a business in Japan and a business in Canada do work together, this is economic globalization. Being able to work with, transfer ideas to, create business for, or all around benefit the global economic market. The world today is a business as we know it, without being able to transfer ideas through globalization the world would not be as booming as it has been in the last fifty years.

Globalization has become a key part of world affairs as we know it. Where would we be without hearing the news right away, talking to our friends across the globe, or importing a car from another country. Globalization has marked the twentieth century.

Globalization

By: Denon Wilgosh

Globalization is “ a widening, deepening and speeding up of worldwide interconnectedness in all aspects of contemporary social life, from the cultural to the criminal, the financial to the spiritual”. Social, political and economy, are just three examples that stem from the general idea of globalization. Cell phones have improved social globalization, the United Nations has attempted to improve political globalization, and McDonalds is an example of economic dominance and globalization.

The Top 5 mobile phone manufacturers are located in practically every country in the world. A once expensive piece of equipment for the rich, there are now more cell phones in some countries than regular landlines. This technology has created social globalization by “speeding up worldwide interconnectedness”, allowing anyone in any country, to call another person on another side of the world. The ability for all people to stay connected any time of the day, any day of the year, and from anywhere in the world, has led to the creation of a socially efficient planet.

A socially efficient planet requires a politically united planet. The United Nations is the best attempt in terms of producing a consistent “international organization whose stated aims are to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress and human rights”. Currently the United Nations has 192 member states out of a supposed 194 countries at this current time. With this kind of support, successful or not, the United Nations can easily be called a political effort at globalization.

Another global entity with massive support is the economic super power McDonalds. With over 31,000 restaurants worldwide, and locations in more than 119 countries on six continents, 47 million customers a day around the world eat McDonalds. With these kinds of numbers it is impossible to say, that McDonalds is not an example of economic globalization. In addition to McDonalds being a global company, they also “glocalize”, meaning they remain an international company, but may slightly change their menu or other items based on where a certain restaurant is located. In the end, the “golden arches” are and always will be recognized by people across the world.

The example of McDonalds as economic globalization, the United Nations as political globalization, and cell phones as social globalization are all examples under the general idea of becoming global. As we can see, every part of our lives is slowly becoming global. It’s a combination of many different parts that will eventually create a global world, first socially, then economically, then politically, and whatever else has yet to become a global force. It may not end up being possible that every part of our lives can become global, but we are now and will be more global than ever in the future.

Globalization is known as a unitary process which contains many sub-processes that are all designed to bring people and the biosphere closer together into one large entity. The invention of advanced communication has been a major part of globalization, as it can bring you close to someone anywhere else in the world. The three primary focuses are on social unity, political unity, and economic unity. Three secondary focuses include cultural, ecological and technological unity.

Economic globalization involves the convergence of products, prices, wages, interest rates and profits. You are looking to balance the economy of all the different countries to equalize them all in the global market. A free market must be established globally to allow for the trading of goods amongst any and all countries. This is why most large businesses are starting to accept the different types of currency, such as yen, yuan, pounds, and Canadian or American dollars. And companies try to expand to the global scale, and so you see many tags saying ‘Made in China’ or something like that for an American company.

Political globalization involves establishing a shared form of politics (such as democracy) amongst all countries and the establishment of laws upheld throughout the world. This should help to eliminate cruel behaviours and protect people against things which are totally unreasonable and should be illegal, no matter your country. The global court of law should, obviously and logically, include all countries, not those which decide to participate. The cold war was the large ideological battle between different politics, with it seeing where they measured up against each other. USSR fought for communism and USA for capitalism in the space race and in the arms race. USSR also fought against Canada’s capitalism in the Canada-Russia Summit Series in 1972, which was a simple competition to see who has better at the sport of hockey. All these events eventually added up and caused USSR break down into many different countries and the main one, Russia, gave up on communism.

Social globalization involves tying the world together so that you are able to communicate with anyone around the world and share with them your religions and your values. It is also connecting us all the roadways and airplanes. This is what allows businesses to expand to global scales. This brings us religions that we likely would have never experienced had it not been for social globalization. It has brought Canada and allowed Canada to share with other countries all the different religions, such as Buddhism and Christianity. This allows people to live anywhere and to talk to anyone. So in a way, social globalization is really just an expansion upon our freedom, and that is why it is such a huge part of globalization.

Globalization comes in many different shapes and ideas; one of these forms is in politics. One of the biggest political examples of globalization is the Kyoto Accord. The Kyoto Accord is a global project in which many countries work together to cut down on the amount of green house gas emissions that are being released into Earths atmosphere. Some of the countries involved in the protocol are Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy, Russia and France. These are just a few of the countries that have agreed to the protocol directed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2010.

The Euro has become the world’s strongest currency and is being used in numerous countries across Europe. The affects of this currency spreading across Europe have given an increase to its value and made it the strongest currency in the world. The Euro was created to make traveling from one European country to another easier. The way the Euro has spread across Europe is an example of economic globalization because it is a shared wealth between many countries of the world.

Globalization is something that people have come to live with. They may not agree with it, but it is something that is benefiting people around us. Twenty years from now the world will rely upon the transfer of ideas, the ability to communicate, and international affairs. None of these things would be the way they were if it weren’t for globalization.
